You have questions, we have answers
Finding the right care for your mental health matters. We hope this information helps you make an informed choice.
What can I expect in therapy?
Therapy is a collaborative process between you and your therapist, where you can expect to have your goals heard and supported. It is a safe space designed to assist everyday people with their thoughts, feelings and actions. Therapists will gently guide you towards healing through a variety of established techniques, depending on your needs and their training.
Why do people go to therapy?
People access therapy for many reasons, including but not limited to: managing emotions, improving relationships, coping with life stressors, processing grief and loss, and reducing the impacts of trauma. Therapists are also specifically trained to treat mental disorders such as anxiety, depression, PTSD and more. Therapy is an effective tool for improving overall mental wellbeing.
Is my information confidential?
Yes, all services at Wise Mind Therapy Collective are confidential, and all our registered mental health professionals have strict guidelines and codes of ethics for maintaining confidentiality. This means what you share with your therapist will not be disclosed to anyone else, unless you give prior written permission (eg., if you would like your therapist and doctor to correspond).
While we take great care in ensuring your confidentiality, disclosure may be required by law in certain circumstances such as:
imminent or suspected danger towards self or others (eg., suicidality)
disclosure of and / or reason to suspect abuse or maltreatment towards a minor
information is subpoenaed by the court for legal proceedings
How long does therapy take?
Most therapy sessions are approximately 60 minutes long. Some specialized treatments, such as trauma therapy, can take up to 90 minutes per session. While many people experience progress within 6 to 14 sessions, everyone’s journey is different. Some may feel better with fewer sessions, and others may benefit from longer-term support.
What are the benefits and risks of therapy?
Therapy is an interactive process, which can help individuals, couples, children and families achieve goals.
Likely benefits of therapy include:
increased ability to identify and communicate emotions
reduced feelings of distress
improved relationships
increased coping and problem-solving skills
resolution of specific problem(s)
Potential risks of therapy may include:
experiencing uncomfortable feelings such as sadness, anger or guilt while addressing painful topics
temporary difficulties with sleep or other behaviours
lack of noticeable improvement
Potential risks of not pursuing therapy may include:
increased feelings of distress
continued deterioration in functioning
Regular, open communication with your therapist about your therapy experience is vital. Therapists are trained to have these discussions, and can offer coping strategies or adjust your treatment as needed.
What if I live in a remote / rural area?
Not a problem! At Wise Mind Therapy Collective, we offer both in-person and online therapy options for your convenience.
How much will it cost?
The cost per session depends on a handful of factors, including each therapist’s level of education, additional trainings and years in practice. Prices amongst our team range from $110 to $230 per session. Some of our therapists also offer more affordable sliding scale payment options. Read through our team bios to learn more.
All of our therapists are registered health professionals, and our services are covered by most insurance providers. We recommend you check your benefits prior to treatment to know your coverage.
How do I choose a therapist?
Therapy works best when you and your therapist are comfortable with each other and work together as a team. A common saying in the therapy world is, “finding the right therapist is like finding a good pair of shoes – you want to make sure they fit.” Look for a therapist who is skilled in treating others with similar concerns to yours (eg., anxiety). Many therapists also offer free 15-minute consultations, so you can ask them questions about their experience, practice approach and anything else that’s on your mind.
You also want to know your mental health is in skilled hands, which is why all of our therapists are registered in discipline-specific professional bodies. Whether or not you choose a therapist from our team, we recommend you seek out a competent registered mental health professional.
What if my current therapist isn’t the right ‘fit’?
Sometimes, despite best intentions, the fit between a therapist and client may not feel quite ‘right.’ Not to worry. Alternative suitable therapists are available both within Wise Mind Therapy Collective, and the larger community. Should you feel your therapist is not the best fit, rest assured we are very open to discussing your needs and recommending additional qualified therapists.
